How to learn the Arabic alphabet: a realistic plan

The Arabic script is not the obstacle beginners fear. It's a regular system, and once you see its logic you speed up.

Understand the idea first

Arabic is written right to left, and most letters have up to four shapes depending on position: on their own, at the start, in the middle or at the end. Many letters share a basic shape and differ only by their dots.

Study letters in families

Learn look-alike letters together: ب ت ث ن ي, then ج ح خ, then د ذ, then ر ز, and so on. Telling dots apart becomes one exercise instead of ten.

Combine reading with sound from the start: read short real words (باب, كتاب, بيت) instead of isolated letters only.

Habits that make the difference

Ten minutes a day beats an hour a week. Write letters by hand, review them with spaced repetition, and ask your teacher to correct your pronunciation live.

Most committed learners read simple words within a few weeks of regular practice, though pace varies from person to person, so don't compare yourself with others.
